Olympic Girl of the Day

Today's featured olympian is 20-year old Ana Ivanovic of Serbia.

I tried my hardest to find good "athletic" action photos of her, but, the photos of her modeling were far better in quality. I'll just give you a few more.

Um...I hear she is a pretty decent tennis player...

Actually, she is a really good tennis player. She won the past French Open, and finsished 2nd at the Australian Open. She was the favorite entering into Olympic play last weekend...however she withdrew prior to competition, citing a "recurring thumb injury".

At any rate, she will be competing at the U.S. Open next month as the #1 player in the world. I sure hope she does well...

If these photos aren't enough, you can find more on her website.

Olympic Girl of the Day

Today's featured olympian is 21-year old Ksenija Balta of Estonia.
Balta competes in the Heptathlon. In case you don't what the Heptathlon is (I sure as heck didn't), it is a combination of scores from 7 different events in Track & Field: 100m Hurtles, High Jump, Shot Put, 200m sprint, Long Jump, Javelin, and the 800m run.
In 2005 she finished with a Bronze medal at the European Junior Championships. Her competitions begin this week.

Olympic Girl of the Day

Today's olympian is 20-year old Alicia Sacramone.
She is a member of the United States' women's gymnastics team. They won the silver medal in these games.

Even though Miss Sacramone, native of Worcester (spoken "Wuhstah") Mass., is only 20 years old, she was the anchor of the squad.

Okay...let's just call a spade a spade...she's freakin' hot, people. "Good on 'ya", Alicia...now finish up your college education at Brown University (an Ivy League school, folks) and make your country proud.

Olympic Girl of the Day

I'm giving myself permission to bend the rules for the "Olympic Girl of the Day" series of posts. The terms of the deal were that it'd be about foreign athletes. Well, today's winner is playing on a foreign team for the olympics. Does that count?

And so I give you Becky Hammon.
Becky is a native of South Dakota. She is playing on the Russian women's olympic basketball team. How did this happen? Well, she wasn't in the original 21-player pool last March for Team USA, so she reached out to Russia, and the coach she played for during winter league in Russia, CSKA.

In the WNBA, Becky was recently traded from New York to San Antonio.

I hope you don't mind that I bent the rules, just this once.

Olympic Girl of the Day

Today's Olympian is 30-year old Kim Gevaert from Belgium.

She is an accomplished sprinter for the Belgian olympic team, most recently earning a bronze medal at the European Championships for her work in the Women's 4x100m relay. She is a specialist in the 100m sprint. Her best time is 11.04s. Her personal best sprint of 400m is 51.45s.

She also does a bit of modeling in her spare time. She is a big fan of Omega watches..

...as well as being a HUGE fan of cheese...

Yes, that is an advertisement for cheese. They get away with so much more in Europe...it's a huge shame. My Wisconsin roots are yearning for better advertising in the United States.

Olympic Girl of the Day

Today's olympian is 36-year old Magali Di Marco Messmer of Switzerland.

Messmer competes in the Triathlon. This is her 3rd Olympic Games. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, she took home the bronze medal in Triathlon. She will compete for the gold medal this year on day 10 of the games, August 18th. She will certainly be in our prayers.

Apparently, in her free time she finds that modeling helps her relax from her strenuous training regimen. Now, let's celebrate with the Swiss gals at the Sydney olympics once more...

If you look carefully at this photo, there are trees in the background. It took me about 10 minutes to notice this.
